Tale Skjølsvik with Value Strategy Book

The idea

Strategy aims to create stakeholder value through formulation, foundation and destination.

The book

A practical and theoretically founded approach to expand, create and drive value.

Why now

AI, geopolitics and sustainability demand value creation rooted in conscious decisions.

The Premise

Strategy can
unlock untapped
value

Most organizations have a strategy. Far fewer are clear about the value they create, where it comes from, the values it builds on, and the value it will create in the future.

Strategy, done well, requires deliberate reflection. This book aims to reframe the way we approach strategy by putting value and values at its center.

Rather than clinging to outdated models, leaders can embrace new perspectives that help them navigate uncertainty and focus on what truly matters.

The book sets out to:

  • Challenge existing approaches to strategy
  • Reveal the assumptions behind them
  • Offer a universal approach that combines analysis and creativity

It builds on existing research and a review of the strategies of more than 750 publicly listed Nordic organizations, with real cases used throughout.

How Spotify used “The Band”
Manifesto to develop a music
ecosystem

Music streaming · 7000+ people · Sweden
01 · The assumption

In creating an ecosystem all stakeholders must want to join

By using “the Band” metaphor Spotify builds to the rationale for people to come together based values that appeal to all their stakeholder such as artists, listeners and employee. They create a space where people want to play along.

02 · Stakeholder sensitivity

Strategy communication as stakeholder sensitive

One massage might not fit all. Spotify communicates strategy differently to employees and investors, where investor communication are around the business model while employees are engaged as a band.

03 · Stategy uniqueness

Strategy is about uniqueness – also in approach

The case illustrates that strategy ultimately is about uniqueness and the ability to create value for stakeholders – even in how they approaches strategy – for example by framing themselves as a band.

Who it’s for

Written for
the people
who have
to deliver

But who understands that reflexivity, values and purpose will make the delivery even better.

“Value Strategy plumbs the depth of a very deep Blue Ocean: AI and continued human involvement in the value creation process, in order to foster a continued emphasis on human values to build innovative futures that are sustainable, ethical, and deeply human. This is a must-read for those leaders who still cherish humanity’s role in a world of increased AI reliance.”

William (Bill) Fischer,

Senior Lecturer at the Sloan School of Management and

Emeritus Professor of innovation Management at IMD,

Named to the Thinkers50 Hall of Fame.

“For decades, strategy has taught leaders to ask where to play and how to win. Tale Skjølsvik asks a bigger and more human question: what do we value, what value do we want to create, and what kind of future do we want to shape? Drawing on Nordic perspectives of trust, collaboration and stakeholder value, she challenges us to expand how we think about strategy, at exactly the moment when technology is expanding what is possible.”
Kimberly Mathiesen, CEO, Hub Ocean - founded by the Aker Group and the World Economic Forum, Member of the Supervisory Board, Bayer
